Update: Adding another line to your home using Voice over IP

Previously I posted an article about adding a second line to our home for a fax machine. I decided I would buy a Linksys PAP2T-NA two line VOIP adapter. This box connects to your internet router in your home and then has two ports for connecting your normal telephone. The adapter costs about $50 and to get a dedicated phone line from Teliax costs $5/month. You then pay $.02 a minute for your calls. Teliax has a pay per use setup so you just pay the $5/month and small amount for each time you want to use the telephone. For me, a couple times a week to fax. I assume I will be paying less than $6/month to add a second line to my home for a fax machine.

Linksys PAP2T-NA
The setup is quite simple. When you get the Linksys adapter, setup Teliax account and do the following list to accomplish the task in less than 5 minutes. I will provide examples for each step.
First, you’ll need to connect to the Linksys adapter.
• Connect the adapter to power and your network.
• Plug in a phone to the adapter
• Pick up the phone and dial ‘*’ (star) four times.
• You’ll hear a menu. Press 110# to hear the IP address of the phone. (write this down)
• Once you have the IP address, enter it in your computer’s web browser. (ex. http://192.168.1.101 where the 192.168.1.100 is the number read back to you in the step above).
Once you’re connected, you can change all sorts of settings.
• Click on ‘Admin Login’ – there is no username or password by default.
• You’re looking for ‘Voice’ or ‘Line 1′ to configure.
Start entering information.
• User ID: This is your Device username, found on the Dashboard in the setup->device section. username is the second column.
• Password: The password associated with the Device, found on the Dashboard also in the setup->device section. Password is the third column
• Proxy: If you have a DID, set this to whichever Teliax proxy your DID is pointing to on the Dashboard. For outbound-only, you can use any of the Teliax proxies. A proxy example is den.teliax.net. You can see all of the options when you click on the dashboard menu option. If you have a number for inbound, the will be found in the setup->numbers section and the proxy you have selected there.
Click the Submit button. The device will restart, and should be connected to the Teliax network.
That simple!
